It may be the Year Of The Rabbit, but don't expect its auto offerings to be cutesy little things

THIS weekend, we're going to talk about all things rabbit when it comes to cars.

Take Volkswagen. It has offered an extra hop with the specially-named, limited-edition Golf Rabbit - a special edition of its popular Golf hatchback.

It's fitting, as until recently, the Volkswagen Golf model was always traditionally known in the United States as the Volkswagen Rabbit.

The special edition features a classic "Rabbit" badge, designed by David Epstein; different 16-inch alloy wheels; and a keyless entry system that features a start-stop button.

The car is otherwise mechanically identical to the Golf 1.4, which has 122bhp, a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox along with a 0-100 time of 9.5 seconds and maximum speed of 200kmh. Fifty units of this limited edition will be on sale at $111,800 with COE.

Audi A6 3.0

Then, there's Audi with its new A6 3.0. This is the car that is expected to leap over its competition this year.

The luxury sedan saw its first-generation in 1994 - interestingly, the Year Of The Dog. Equally interesting, the general almanac forecast for Dogs in the Rabbit Year is good.

But the A6 needs no mystical mumbo jumbo to be a front-runner, thanks to the powerhouse combination of an involving drive, a superb interior and numerous safety and technology improvements.

Making this possible is a newly developed chassis and body, which Audi claims weighs up to 80kg less than before, thanks to parts like the bonnet and doors being made of aluminium. It helps maintain levity despite packing the Audi's signature quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) system.

Driving the A6 in a regular fashion is rewarding as the handling is pleasingly responsive and neatly masks the car's near five-metre bulk. When we test drove the vehicle in Sicily, we found that the conventional sports suspension (an air option is available) lets the A6 easily deal with Sicily's tricky, wet mountain roads.

Audi's new AWD system shunts torque to the rear wheels quicker, but having power sent to all four wheels also means the A6 can safely hustle with the best of them.

The drivetrain is the familiar, potent combination of 3.0 supercharged V6 and seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox (like the S4 sedan). And though it only has 290bhp, it is smoother and endows the A6 with impossibly long legs.

It's also packed with every manner of tech wizardry and safety improvements - it can help you save fuel, keep your lane, watch out for crazed overtakers, follow the car in front of you, and adjust its lights so it doesn't blind others. Its best trick, though, is turning into a 3G mobile Wi-Fi hotspot on demand.

The cabin is a delight, as it resembles the luxurious A8's cabin, and appropriates its new touch-based multimedia interface too. In light of all the talents waiting to be found beneath the skin, it's high time this Dog had its year.

Ups
