Road Test: Maruti Suzuki Kizashi

Say Maruti Suzuki and the first thing which comes to your mind is surely a hatchback. But all that is all set to change considering the manufacturer’s next launch, the Kizashi! Enthusiasts will remember seeing a Kizashi at the 2010 Auto Expo, but this is not the same car. Post Auto Expo a few more concepts were seen and the production version is based on the third version.
Getting back to the present, while the Kizashi is similar in size to the Laura, Civic and Corolla Altis, Maruti wants to target the Accord with it, especially because it has a similar 2.4-litre engine that produces about 18bhp more than even the 1.8 TSI of the Laura. The car is being touted as a sports sedan and its looks complement that. The large two-slat grille and sharp headlamps, gives the car a bold front. Thanks to a rather high roofline, ingress and egress is quite comfortable. The Kizashi has also been tweaked for India and has a higher ground clearance than its European counterpart and it gets 17-inch alloys.

Inside, the Kizashi is loaded to the brim. To begin with, the dash looks smart and there’s soft touch plastic all around. The instrument panel is a two-pod affair, backlit in white. The steering wheel meanwhile gets toggle buttons for audio, cruise control and trip computer. The Kizashi also gets climate control and an iPod and USB compatible audio system. The seats are large units and comfortable to be in. To add to the package the driver gets a ten-way adjustable electric seat with memory function.
We must mention here that the quality of materials inside and the finish on the Kizashi, which is a CBU, is much better than has been seen in other Maruti cars.
Start up the Kizashi and the 2.4-litre petrol motor purrs into life. Barely audible, it is a smooth operator. The clutch feels light and the six-speed manual slots in with minimal effort but feels positive. While we are yet to test the car, the Kizashi does accelerate rapidly when the right foot is buried into the carpet.

It's also great for cruising on highways. Indeed it can cruise at 140kph all day long without tiring the driver out. Moreover there is little noise creeping into the cabin to bother occupants, except when the engine is revved till the redline on the tacho.
The steering feels weighed and is quick, but at the same time feels a bit vague. The Kizashis’s suspension too has been retuned for India and as a result it has become softer. At slow speeds, bump absorption is top notch and very little is transferred into the cabin. However this has taken a bit of a toll on the handling capabilities of the car as it has acquired considerable body roll and gets twitchy when braked hard from a high speed. Not such a good vibe in a ‘Sports sedan.’
Auto option

We also drove the Kizashi with a CVT hooked to the same 2.4-litre petrol engine. Externally there's nothing to distinguish the auto version but look at the steering wheel and you will see the paddleshifters. These are cleverly placed and fall  into hand easily and take little time to get used to. At normal speed the shifts are smooth and you will be hard pressed to tell that it is shifting. However cluck the gearshifter into the manual mode and the difference can be felt. It revs all the way to the redline and holds it there until you actually shift up. This gives it the feel of a proper manual. The engine, a free revving unit, complements this. However it is not so effective whilst downshifting as the CVT takes time to shift.

Super Car: 2010 Zenvo ST1

The Zenvo ST1 is designed to express the excessive power and performance of the car.
The design brief from the Zenvo creators to the designers at hermann & brandt design consultancy was to design a supercar that looked like no other supercar. The design had to be aggressive mixing supercar styling with race car elements.

The design of the Zenvo ST1 is made from free flowing accelerating lines creating the shape of the wheel arches, the roof line, side line and the lower side air intake. The sharp lines are connected by muscular organic surfacing creating dramatic reflections. Contrasting the general surfacing the design features a race car inspired lower carbon splitter.

The front of the Zenvo ST1 is designed around the hexagonal trademark Zenvo grille flanked by the large front air intakes used for brakes and engine cooling. The intakes are raked back to minimize drag and at the same time making the side impression of the car more compact.

The theme of the front is repeated in the rear which is designed around the big diffuser necessary for high speed stability. As on the front the center volume is flanked by large air exits extracting hot engine air as well as housing the exhaust and rear lights.

The rear spoiler mandatory for a car capable of extreme high speeds is partly integrated in the rear wing. It has a unique aerodynamic design following the raked shape of the rear end.

Super Car: 2010 Lexus LFA

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FoXyvaPSnVk/Srl_dm8tXCI/AAAAAAACFH8/_Ll6yQ37o8g/s800/2010-Lexus-LF-A-V10-0.jpghttp://image.internetautoguide.com/f/auto-news/2010-lexus-lf-a-supercar-spied-before-the-2009-tokyo-auto-show-first-look/26197474+cr1+re0+ar1/2010-lexus-lf-a-supercar-spy-shots.jpg
With a fairly long and public development period, the Lexus LFA debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009. It trailed a series of concepts released at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) which became more refined with each model. The first concept, the LF-A, was shown in 2005 and laid out the basic design which included a front/mid-mounted V10 powering the rear wheels, a carbon fiber chassis and a rear-mounted transaxle.

The entire project began in 2000 when Haruhiko Tanahashi was given the green light to design a world class supercar from the bottom up. His research would lead him to carbon-fiber reinforced plastic which makes up the bulk of the LFA. As early as 2004, prototypes internally labeled P280 began testing on the Nürburgring. More extensive testing was done in Germany in 2006 and many long-term issues were discovered at the racetrack including reliability and durability issues. Even after six years, the engineers were unhappy with their results and took the car back to Japan for modifications.

In 2008, Lexus decided to openly race their matte-black prototype at the Nürburgring 4 hour VLN endurance race. Really nothing more than a development exercise with minimum safety modifications, they finished 77th overall and won the SP8 class. Later that year an LF-A was entered in the 24-hours of Nürburgring and finished 121st overall, finishing at the back of the pack in SP8 class. In 2009, two prototypes were prepared and run with proper livery for team Gazoo Racing. Only one car finished the race in 87th overall and 4th in its class.

At the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, Lexus officially presented the LF-A to the international press and displayed a pre-production prototype that was close to final specification. At that time they announced production was limited to 500 units with only 20 cars being completed per month at their factory in Toyota, Japan.

The car can be easily compared to Lamborghini Gallardo, Ferrari F458 and Aston Martin DB9. Like these cars, the LF-A was designed from the onset with racecar engineering. The chassis is a one-piece, carbon-fiber tub that has removable front and rear aluminum subframes that support the driveline, bumpers, and fenders. These are important for maintenance since they can be replaced to repair accident damage.

Called the 1LR-GEU, the new V10 has a narrow angle of Āŗ72. To reduce size, the unit has dry-sump lubrication which force feeds oil from a separate reservoir. Lexus says this new engine has the same dimensions as their V6. Furthermore, the aluminum block has a fully integrated crankcase and the intake includes individual throttle bodies. The unit is mounted very far back in the engine bay to achieve a 48:52 front to rear weight balance.

Power is sent from this engine via a rigid torque tube to a 6-speed sequential. Called ASG, Lexus uses an electrohydraulic system which shifts in 200ms.

Several safety systems prevent excessive oversteer in the LFA. A computer call VDIM coordinates several. One of the primary systems is VSC which detects speed, slip, yaw to direct the car towards the driver's steering angle. The system limits engine output and uses selective braking. Basic traction control is offered on the rear wheels with a system called TRAC/TRC.

Press Release

Tokyo, October 21, 2009 - Lexus announces today the official launch of the LFA, a two-seat supercar scheduled to go into production at the end of 2010 as the pinnacle of the Lexus "F" premium sports car series. Pre-sales start today.

Ultra-responsive and extremely stable even when taken to the edge, the LFA creates a sense of reassurance that opens up a new world of driving emotion, exhilarating the senses to move the driver in more ways than one.

The LFA combines high output, superb chassis design and meticulous aerodynamics to achieve instantaneous total-vehicle response characterized by high-rev, seamless acceleration echoed by a self-defining resonance from its 4.8-liter V10.

Only 500 units of the LFA are to be produced and sold worldwide.

A prototype of the LFA is now on display at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show, which is open to the general public from October 24 to November 4 at Makuhari Messe in Makuhari, Chiba Prefecture.

Strong and light

The newly developed 4.8-liter V10 engine boasts exceptional power, while lightweight materials (aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy and titanium alloy) and a very compact size (smaller than a conventional V8) allows for optimal weight distribution and an exceptional power-to-weight ratio.

Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) cabin enhances high body-rigidity and reduces weight. This unique cabin is 100kg lighter than a comparable aluminum cabin. Detailed analysis and precise matching of CFRP materials allows for high rigidity and low weight. LFA CFRP production technology, including unique CFRP-to-metal joining, was completely developed by Lexus.

Balanced

Relatively higher weight components such as the engine and transmission are placed within the wheelbase. A low center of gravity is made possible by the use of dry sump lubrication1, along with placing peripheral components (oil pump, water pump) behind the engine. Furthermore, optimal placement of the transmission and the fuel tank in front of the rear axle adds to this application of centralized mass. This minimizes weight shift during cornering and contributes to outstanding performance and stability. Lighter weight components, like the radiator and electric fans, are placed behind the rear axle.

Combined with a front-engine and rear-wheel-drive configuration, the short, wide and low body allows the LFA to achieve its target front-to-rear weight distribution of 48:52.

Driver-centered

The driver's seat is positioned near the LFA's center of gravity. The centralized seating concept (with the seat between the front and rear axles and closer to the left–right center) is made possible by the use of a rear transaxle and vertically stacked torque tube and exhaust pipes reducing the width of the center tunnel. The driver placement is aimed to provide maximum car-to-driver feedback, especially under sport or high G-force driving conditions.

V10 Engine

Titanium valves, ultra–light weight rocker arms with a diamond–like coating and a fully integrated lower crankcase that reduces pumping losses at high RPMs combine to provide the driver with overwhelming acceleration right up to the 9,000rpm redline. The LFA's purpose-built V10 delivers 90% of its peak torque between 3,700rpm and 9,000rpm.

Precise Response

Independent, electronically controlled throttle bodies ensure precise air-feed to each of the 10 cylinders, enabling immediate engine response from the accelerator pedal. The engine response time is approximately half the normal response time of a single-throttle valve.

The six-speed ASG transmission features heavy-duty synchronizer rings and a newly developed gearshift actuator, providing the driver with a very direct shift feel. Four selectable driving modes and a seven-stage shift-speed selector that results in upshift speeds down to 0.2 seconds provide a higher level of driver control.

Track-sized high-performance (Carbon Ceramic) CCM brake discs and Electronically Controlled Braking system generate ultra-powerful yet stable braking.

Handling and Dynamics

The very light and rigid CFRP cabin, combined with a front double-wishbone suspension and a rear multilink suspension, result in a very stable, controlled ride. Detailed aerodynamic engineering results in elements such as a flat underbody, a diffuser and a speed-controlled rear wing, which allows precise vehicle response at all vehicle speeds, thus creating unity between driver and machine.

Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management integrates numerous vehicle dynamic functions that provide a high level of vehicle stability and preventative safety without interfering with the driver's intentions, especially when sport driving.

Exciting engine sound and L-finesse2 design
Equal-length exhaust manifolds combined with an equal-length dual exhaust system routed through a multistage titanium main muffler fine tunes the exhaust note.

An acoustically tuned surge tank linked to 10 individual throttle bodies creates a powerful induction sound. The coordination of intake and exhaust sounds overlap at various RPMs to create a unique, exciting and inspired soundtrack.

The exterior design includes carefully tuned aerodynamics and airflow management. The use of CFRP, in addition to strength and weight advantages, frees up the design of the exterior panels allowing a fresh supercar L-finesse design. The interior design combines state-of-the-art instrument-panel design and technology, along with a variety of custom-tailored interior trim packages to suit the most discerning driver.

Super Car: 2009 AC Schnitzer BMW X6

http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-2009/a/2009-AC-Schnitzer-BMW-X6-Rear-And-Side-1024x768.jpghttps://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSORr2TuD-AJCcHxX_02JmMLJwPan7avcDAo74k3-8kiPycwh6cBiLUtVojb8VJnrP6CyGgDf3eiW6xEiGjFjg4Vp37xLO9bLbNwqSIxu6kgDSTssxYcpXFxpXrh6dPTDNHaJpnHCG/s400/AC-Schnitzer-BMW-X6-Falcon-11%5B1%5D.jpg
An eyecatcher at first glance - this calls for a closer look. AC Schnitzer presents the new styling and performance package for the BMW X6

The new BMW X6 exerts a particular form of magnetism: not only does its chassis sit perfectly on the road, it also magically attracts attention. Now it appears there is only one place where the fascination, dynamism and presence of the first Sports Activity CoupƩ (SAC) can be enhanced: in the workshops of AC Schnitzer in Aachen. The result is a visual and technical masterpiece which further magnifies the core qualities of the X6.

In the X6 by AC Schnitzer, the front skirt with its diagonal air intakes and repositioned fog lights are exposed. The drive-under protection has been removed in favour of a more dynamic contour of the spoiler edge. The rear carries a massive skirt with framed edges. In contrast to the original, all components are painted body-colour throughout, so the body appears downstretched and hence more dominant. Instead of the drive-under protection originally fitted here, AC Schnitzer Designer Michele Viandante has opted for a rear diffuser.

Another eyecatcher is the chromed tailpipes of the dual-flow exhaust system in AC Schnitzer
Racing Design. The BMW X6 is not the only SAC in the world, but it is one of the first vehicles to be fitted with the multipiece AC Schnitzer alloy wheels Type Vll. With their black paint and tightly arranged spokes, the 22" rims present a challenging stance. The changing angles of the web pairs give an air of sophistication.

Typical AC Schnitzer: The vehicle's appearance is not misleading, but simply a reflection of its inner values. The renowned BMW tuner has developed a real firecracker under the bonnet of the diesel versions 3.0dX and 3.5dX with a new Motor Control Unit. Precise performance data will be released shortly. Of course, sheer engine power is not the only ingredient in sporting performance. So Manfred Wollgarten, Technical Director of AC Schnitzer, has developed a unique suspension spring kit for the X6 on the North Loop of the Nürburgring.

One thing can be disclosed: Despite its high body, the X6 by AC Schnitzer in this configuration will show a clean pair of heels to many sports saloons. Perfect handling with corresponding Look and Feel is ensured by the "EVO" 3-spoke Sport Airbag steering wheel. With AC Schnitzer, you hold the road firmly in almost any position. The X6 by AC Schnitzer takes control on public roads as willingly as on changing terrain with varying up and down gradients!

http://www.caranddriver.com/var/ezwebin_site/storage/images/buying_guide/jaguar/xj/2010_jaguar_xj/2010_jaguar_xj_car_news/1446749-1-eng-US/2010_jaguar_xj_car_news_featured_item.jpghttp://www.egmcartech.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/2010_jaguar_xj_teaser_1.jpghttp://www.ridelust.com/wp-content/uploads/20091212_jaguar_xj1.jpg
Following the XF design theme, the XJ is completely restyled with the same styling from the 2007 Jaguar CX-F Concept. It shares the XF's range of direct gasoline injection engines, as well as its supercharged V8 producing 510 bhp. New to the range are plasma screen 'Virtual Instruments' and a 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

Press Release

Sleek, sporting and sophisticated, the all-new Jaguar XJ brings a daring new spirit to automotive luxury. It offers a seductive mix of striking design, breathtaking performance and engineering without compromise.

The new XJ is the epitome of fluid, contemporary automotive style. The elongated teardrop shape of the side windows establishes the car’s silhouette and lies at the heart of its flowing design. And the new XJ doesn’t just look streamlined: it shares a drag coefficient of 0.29 with the XF saloon, making them the most aerodynamic Jaguars ever.

A coupƩ profile cloaks a cabin that offers comparable levels of space to saloons with a more conventional style. There is generous accommodation for five occupants, while long-wheelbase models provide rear-seat passengers with even greater levels of comfort thanks to an additional 125mm of rear legroom.

The exquisitely designed interior has a strong sporting character throughout. A panoramic glass roof, standard on all models, dramatically enhances the sense of light and space inside the new XJ. And in keeping with its status as the ultimate four-door Jaguar, the XJ introduces a new generation of interior technologies, pioneering the use of display and infotainment systems such as the innovative Virtual Instrument dials and optional 1200W Bowers & Wilkins premium surround sound system.

At the heart of the all-new XJ’s construction is a next-generation application of Jaguar’s unique lightweight vehicle architecture. Primarily aluminium – but also utilising magnesium and composite alloys – it allows Jaguar to produce a significantly lighter and stiffer body – the lightest in its class. The new structure – which retains the same aerospace-based riveting and bonding processes – has been refined using these advanced new materials to deliver improved strength, enhanced refinement and superior safety performance.

The new XJ offers the choice of four powerful and refined engines, which use the latest powertrain technology to deliver an outstanding combination of performance and class-leading efficiency. The supremely powerful supercharged 510PS 5.0-litre AJ-V8 Gen III will head the line-up, with a 0-60mph time of 4.7 secs (0-100kph in 4.9 secs); 470PS supercharged and 385PS naturally aspirated petrol V8s are also available, dependent on market.

A no-compromise diesel alternative is provided by the formidable 275PS 3.0-litre AJ-V6D Gen III. With twin sequential turbochargers, this is an engine that delivers on every aspect of the Jaguar driving experience, marrying tremendous drive (0-60mph in 6.0 secs, 0-100kph in 6.4 secs) with impressive fuel economy and CO2 emissions (40.1mpg and 184g/km of CO2).

The all-new XJ delivers a driving experience that is just as memorable as the car’s appearance. Benefitting from technologies pioneered on the exciting new XFR and XKR models, including continuously variable damping (Adaptive Dynamics), electronically controlled rear differential (Active Differential Control) and a quick ratio power-steering system, the new XJ combines responsive, sporting dynamics with the refined, supple ride expected from a luxury Jaguar.

With its unique lightweight aluminium body structure and advanced new powertrains, the all-new XJ already has a head start when it comes to sustainable performance. The aluminium body uses more than 50 percent recycled material, with a plan to increase this to 75 percent. Body panels made from recycled material use only 5 percent of the energy required for new aluminium, equating to a potential saving of three tonnes of CO2 per vehicle.

“The new XJ is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the quintessential Jaguar. Its visual impact stems from the elongated teardrop shape of the car’s side windows, a powerful stance and wide track. It is the most emphatic statement yet of Jaguar’s new design direction.”

Super Car: Pagani Zonda R

http://stephenschleicher.com/podcast/image/2007/03/05_10/Pagani_Zonda_R_side2.jpg
While one certainly cannot say the Zonda F lacks performance figures, driving around the Nurburgring in 7:32 and achieving lateral G forces of almost 1.5 G, it is however a road car, easy to drive, intuitive and setting the benchmark for comfort, safety and lightweight. Paired with a quality finish and the attention to detail this made the Zonda F one of the most desirable supercars resulting in the 25 Coupe models being sold out in record time. This did not seem to fulfill the requirements of our most demanding customers, who adore the weekend drive on a racetrack.

The spark has been set by an Italo-American customer, enthusiast and already proud owner of 3 Zondas. He describes the project this way: “The thought has been on my mind for quite some time, but I am not interested in racing”.

The Zonda R is born with full liberty. The target: the ultimate performance at the racetrack without any implications of rules, except for safety, where no compromise is allowed. In September 2006 the first drawings were ready, but it was crucial to have the support of Mercedes-AMG for a high revving engine with a power output of 750 bhp, dry sump, light and with a low center of gravity. The basis was the self supporting engine of the mighty CLK GTR, which has dominated the GT championships.

Eve at constant racing pace the engine would have to cover over 3100 miles (5000 kilometers) before servicing.

The Zonda R is a car designed from scratch, with only 10% of the Zonda F components to be carried over. The suspension forged in Avional, a new Pagani six speed transversal sequential gearbox, carbon-fiber monocoque, aeronautical four pump fuel tank are only part of the equation.

The wheelbase has grown by 2 inches, the overall length by 5 inches and the track is increased by 2 inches. The bodywork and aerodynamics have been studied to offer maximum downforce. Even though built for the track, the project would not have received kick off, if the quality and finish of the car and its details was not up to the level of the Pagani road cars.

One of the first cars to be delivered however will be kept in a living room, designed by Pagani and built with the same materials as the Zonda F, beautifully textured carbon-fiber, avional, titanium, inconel and other state of the art materials. Additionally it will feature a bespoke HiFi System that will allow the customer to listen to the sound of this car at Le Mans and the Nurburgring.

The Pagani customers who have ordered the Zonda R will be relieved of almost $1,6 million + taxes.

The Track is its Home

This Zonda is purpose made for track use, without restrictions of any competition rules or homologation, with the only exclusion of the passengers’ integrity, where no compromise is tolerated.

A New Heart

The engine is built by the racing specialists at Mercedes AMG, where the championship winning DTM cars are born, as well as the CLK GTR, probably the most devastating and effective weapon ever to compete in the GT series. From it’s engine the Zonda R borrows the basic architecture including an ingenious dry sump allowing a low centre of gravity. This self-supporting engine with 750 bhp at 8000 rpm and 425 lb-ft of torque carries a lightweight carbon-fiber high-performance intake system, a racing multiple disc sintered clutch and Formula 1 style exhaust system, hydroformed in Inconel 625 and ceramic coated for optimal heat dissipation. The power unit combined with a 6 speed transversal manual sequential synchronized gearbox is designed to satisfy the most ambitious drivers.

The Chassis

The central carbon chassis will incorporate a roll cage and a rubber racing fuel tank with 4 fuel pumps and quick refuel filler like on GT race cars. The wheelbase has been increased by 2 inches to offer the best stability. The front and rear subframes are brand-new, built to accommodate a new suspension geometry, produced in avional. The magnesium forged rims with central wheel nut and a quick pneumatic lifting system allows fast and effortless changes of the slick tires.

Bodywork and Aerodynamics

The new bodywork has been honed to offer elevated downforce even in low speed corners. The longer front bonnet with flaps, closed underbody and the rear overhang with the adjustable rear wing and race derived diffuser translate into shattering aerodynamic efficiency and will let you experience cornering speeds beyond imagination. The car displays and logs information about the amount of dowforce that the car is generating at each moment. Combined with the adjustable wings you can easily find the best setup for each track.

Workstation

The interior is designed to accommodate the driver and passenger in bespoke seats, built to offer the best support, when the G-forces from the vehicle dynamics come into question. The Digitek instrumentation provides the essential information and a sophisticated telemetry allows through a variety of sensors to monitor every single component of the car.
