Scion presents racing game at Canadian auto shows

Toronto, Ontario – Visit a select Canadian auto show this year and play the Scion Augmented Reality tC Racing Game, and you could win a 2011 Scion tC coupe.

“This is our challenge to Canadian Scion enthusiasts to try and clock the fastest time through our city in this exciting virtual driving game,” said Larry Hutchinson, director of Scion in Canada. “We feel that this is a unique, interactive way for the Scion community to have some fun, and compete to drive home a brand-new 2011 Scion tC.”

Enthusiasts can continue to play at home online to try to improve their rankings and unlock even better tC machines, with global top scores posted on the game Web site and on Facebook. Scion gear is also available as prizes to contestants.

The game launches at the Montreal International Auto Show from January 14 to 23, and will also be at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto February 18-27; Calgary International Auto & Truck Show March 9-13; Salon de l’auto de Québec in Quebec City March 17-20; Vancouver International Auto Show March 29-April 3; and the Edmonton Motor Show April 14-17.

If you’re under 35, nonconformist, and preferably a trendsetter, you may read on. At least, that’s what’s insinuated in a Toyota Canada press release dated October 28, describing the target market of the new brand, Scion.



Scion is the youngest of Toyota’s three brands. Introduced in the US in 2003, 16 years after Lexus, its mission is to rejuvenate the image of the Japanese automaker and attract younger North American buyers to its dealerships. The think tank that came up with it dubbed the project “Genesis.” That says it all.

Even before the first cars were delivered to Canadian dealerships in September, Scion had already been associated with its target market, having been linked with such events as the CSCS Xtreme Tuner Challenge and the 2010 ImportFest, with Montreal’s Piknik Electronik and Vancouver’s Shine Night Club.

To better appreciate the diminutive xD I recently tested, after the first few instants on board I spontaneously cranked up the volume of the stereo system as high as it would go and let the rhythms of Don Rimini, Dada Life and Pets on Prozac take me away. Dude.

In fact, Céline Dion would have done just as nicely. After all, the xD is nothing more than a subcompact hatchback like so many others. Its colour palette even features a few insipidly named Toyota Camry hues: Alpine White, Classic Silver, Magnetic Grey and Barcelona Red. If you’re looking to set a trend, look elsewhere.

The xD is sized like a Mazda2, give or take a few millimetres. It can act as a substitute for all those superminis currently on offer, to whit, the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Chevrolet Aveo5, Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio5, and the rest.

This comparison stands until pricing enters the mix. Yes, the base price of the little Scion is quite a bit higher than that of its rivals. I’m talking a $3,000 difference here. The xD is even a few hundred dollars more expensive than the Fiesta, a supermini known for its high base price (which Ford justifies by its longer list of equipment).

In this regard, the xD and Fiesta are indeed alike. Both have inherited air conditioning, power windows, remote access, a rear windshield wiper, traction control and ABS right off the bat, as well as a full suite of airbags. The difference? The xD gets a tilting steering wheel, while the Fiesta’s is also telescopic.

Is there brand any cooler than Scion, right now? If the look of the 2011 Scion xB is any indication, it's on the right track.

It all depends on your perspective, I guess. On the eve of the 2011 Detroit auto show there was spirited discussion about "cool" and what went into making a brand "cool", coming to the conclusion that one man's cool is another man's "lame".


The thing that may go into making the xB cool is its unorthodox looks (which are really becoming more and more orthodox as other manufacturers pick up on them) that appeal to a young demographic. It's a hunkered down look that sort of hints at the front-end slung hot rods of American Graffiti. It's also simple (there's only one car), leading to possibilities for personalizing either through paint or add-ons.

That simplicity is followed through inside, where plain seats tastefully embroidered with the Scion logo welcome four (maybe five) occupants. They aren't meant for support during handling exercises, but the front ones look as if they could be easily replaced by sport or racing seats from Corbeau, Recaro or any other sport-seat manufacturer. Their padding is comfortable and supportive enough for everyday commuting or long trips, but their upholstery doesn't seem durable enough to withstand any long-term abuse.

The rear seatback goes down easily enough in a 60/40 split, but it doesn't go down flat. Still, it's good enough to handle moving longer items that overgrow the already good available trunk space behind the rear seats. Rear seat leg room is acceptable, though understandably tight due to the car's size, and the flat floor makes for comfortable foot positioning.

The driver's office is simple with everything centred (so any front seat occupant can use them, but probably for quick dash replacements between right and left hand drive markets). The high-mounted centre instrument array has a passing resemblance to an Audi four-ring logo and it takes a couple days to get used to but does seem much better once you live with the car for a bit. The doors have a printed, corrugated fabric insert that seems oddly old in a young vehicle.

Ventilation controls are relatively easy to manipulate, though the radio suffers from the typically modern (and probably "cool") presentation of large screen and small buttons. The steering wheel offers some remote controls for quickly surfing between modes and presets.

The dash mounted shifter opens up the front seat people space and there are enough cubbies around the wheel to hold whatever smaller items are taken along for the ride.

The shifter is light to the right hand, as is the clutch to the left foot, and allows the driver to get pretty decent performance out of the 2.4 -litre engine.

Indeed, according to my 19-year old son, the Scion xB is pretty sweet looking (I think that's the terminology ...). It bears a bit of a resemblance to cars such as the Chevrolet SSR and Nissan Cube but neither of those left a lasting impression on him. Well, they did but it wasn't a good impression.

WASHINGTON — The hubbub in the United States over Sarah Palin's use of the charged term "blood libel" obscures a larger point: the former Alaska governor is weighing a run for the presidency in unprecedented and even daring ways, commanding nationwide attention with her selective use of Facebook and Twitter, and choosing provocative words where others would be more diplomatic.

Some political pros say her tactics, which distance her from mainstream reporters and neutral audiences, are savvy and effective. Others say she will have to change if she hopes to win the crucial Iowa caucus or New Hampshire primary, let alone the 2012 general election. Many agree she is testing the campaign possibilities of fast-changing social media.

Iowa and New Hampshire traditionally mark the first major tests of the presidential campaign season.
