Lightning McQueen Volvo Rally Art Car

Lightning McQueen Volvo Rally Art Car Central

If you were 3 years old, what car do you want your parents to own? It's not an easy question to ask a 3 year old as there answers are limited. However, Lightning McQueen surely has to be one of the top. And, if you need a sporty looking vehicle to base your Lightning McQueen on - what would you choose? A Volvo 740 of course.

In this case, three grown adults made the car of their dreams, apparently. A Volvo 740 plucked from obscurity that had spent its life driving round the UK's home counties, was now made into an art car. And driven across Europe repeatedly on our events.

I've never actually worked out what the motivation to make this car was, apart from further capitalising on a Cars dvd they had obviously bought.

You may be wondering whether there are any similarities between this car and a real sports car. There aren't.

However, the side effect of being the proud owner of Lightning McQueen meant that the owner was constantly bugged by their kids to take them to school in Lightning, which included half the kids from the neighbourhood. As the owner lamented one day, we can do the school run in a brand new Mercedes, or Lightning. Lightning won every time.

So there we have it. How to impress your children. Make Lightning McQueen.

Volvo secures order for 463 buses in South America

Volvo Buses has secured an order for 463 bus chassis for Curitiba in Brazil and Quito in Ecuador. All of the buses are to be deployed in the efficient transportation solutions known as BRT systems.

BRT, or Bus Rapid Transit, is one of the most cost-efficient public transport solutions. These transportation systems are based on such features as high passenger capacity buses, separate bus lanes and stops to allow passengers to quickly board and alight from buses.

Latin America has spearheaded the development of BRT systems, which are used in many cities in the region, although this type of efficient transportation system now exists in many locations throughout the world.

Volvo Buses is a market leader for the delivery of buses for BRT systems and this position is further strengthened by the company’s latest order for 463 bus chassis.

Curitiba in Brazil was the first city to introduce BRT systems and Volvo has been a leading supplier to the system since it was started. The new order is for 383 bus chassis encompassing a combination of chassis for bi-articulated buses, articulated buses and standard 12-meter buses. The customers, Pontual, Transbus and Pioneiro, are three of the consortiums that operate transportation services in Curitiba and its neighboring towns.

“This is one of the largest orders that we have received in Curitiba,” says Luis Carlos Pimenta, President of Volvo Buses Latin America.

The second order for a BRT system is for 80 articulated buses for Quito, the capital of Ecuador. The customer is EPMMOP, one of the operators of the south zone of Quito’s BRT systems.

“We secured this order due to Volvo’s reputation in the country as a manufacturer of high-quality, robust vehicles,” explains Luis Carlos Pimenta. “It was also due to the excellent technical support provided by our importer, Macasa, and Volvo’s broad experience of transportation in large cities located at high altitudes.”

All 463 chassis are to be manufactured at Volvo Buses’ plant in Curitiba commencing in January with deliveries scheduled during 2011.

Volvo planning factory in west China's Chengdu

SHANGHAI (AP) — Volvo Car Corp. says it is planning a manufacturing base for the western Chinese city of Chengdu, as it aims for expansion in the world's biggest market following its buyout by independent automaker Geely.

An official with the city's Automotive Industry Investment Bureau confirmed a report Tuesday that the Swedish carmaker had chosen Chengdu as a manufacturing base, but would not give further details.

The Volvo factory reportedly will be focused on making compact and economy cars on a large scale. Shanghai and the northern city of Daqing also had been vying for new Volvo factories following the acquisition last year by Geely.

Devon man escapes as car plunges onto railway line

A Devon driver says he is lucky to be alive after his car's electronic handbrake apparently failed and the vehicle plunged onto a railway line.

Chris Faulkner, 67, had parked his car in his driveway at Harberton, near Totnes, but it started rolling down the hill.

He tried to stop the car but it fell about 20ft down a bank to the tracks.

Thousands of rail travellers had their journeys disrupted as Network rail cleared the line.

The incident on Sunday morning began when Mr Faulkner returned home in his Volvo V70 after picking up a friend in Totnes.

"I put the electronic handbrake on and reached into the back to collect some things," he said.

"My passenger had already got out of the car.

"But the car had started moving and was gathering speed.

"The next thing I was clambering out of the car with its nose facing up in the air and the rear sitting next to the railway line."

Mr Faulkner dialled 999 and Network Rail put speed restrictions on the eastbound line between Plymouth and Exeter until it removed the car early on Monday morning.

Furniture maker Mr Faulkner said: "I am very lucky.

"If a train had been coming and clipped the car it would have been very different."

The car is being inspected by a Volvo dealership.

A company spokesman said there were no known problems with the handbrake system.

Burglars clocked at 150mph in stolen car

Two burglars who stole a car were caught by police doing 150mph on the motorway.

Warren Tevlin, of St George’s Street, Stalybridge, broke into a house in Warrington with Wayne Singleton, of Uplands Road, Glossop.

The pair stole two laptops, credit cards, cash and keys to a Volvo S80 while the occupants were asleep.

But they were caught after police clocked the car travelling at 150mph on the M60 near Warrington and gave chase.

Appearing at Warrington Crown Court, both men admitted burglary and aggravated vehicle taking from the property on Durham Close, Woolston, last September.

They needed money to pay off drug debts, the court heard.

Singleton, 22, a father-of-two, who was at the wheel when they were stopped also admitted driving while disqualified and was jailed for a total of two years and four months.

Alison Heyworth, defending Singleton, said: "He has a terrible record for driving offences and now recognises the effect his lifestyle has had."

The court also heard that Tevlin, 26, had 10 convictions for 19 offences including theft, burglary and assault.

Paul Lamb, defending the father-of-four, said: "There was a break-up in his relationship.

"He turned to alcohol and narcotics which led to the debt incurred, and the offence, but he had no control over the driving."

He was sentenced to 15 months in prison.

Infiniti G37, Volvo XC60 and more

Last year was, says Dennis DesRosiers, was a “great year” for dealer profitability, yet if you dig into the estimates from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, you’ll find that the average return on sales for a Canadian car dealer was a less-than-astonishing 2.0 per cent in 2010.

Dealer profitability was up from a return on sales of 1.75 per cent, but it’s pretty clear that to make a buck selling cars, a new car dealer needs to be pretty savvy.

DesRosiers estimates total net profits were up 21.3 across the entire new vehicle network, even with a decline in the number of dealers across Canada. Net profit per dealer came in at $449,000.

“This number surprises many when we put it on the street (most think it is low), but you have to remember that there are a lot of very small dealers in Canada,” says DesRosiers in a note to clients.

“There are about 700 dealers in Canada who sell less than 500 new and used combined units per store and obviously this biases the number down quite a bit. There are also brands as a whole that have little to no profitability at the dealer level and this biases the number down as well.”

Here at Deals of the Week we are bringing up dealer profits only to point out that buyers are facing some very smart and capable dealers out there. Thus, Canadians dealers are not giving away anything without a real negotiating battle.

Buyers need to research their purchases carefully; they are going up against dealers how coming out of the big recession have tightened up their operations. The only way for a buyer to compete is to focus on the due diligence of the deal. This will pay off in savings.

This week at Deals, we’re looking closely at some very nice discounts on 2010 models. In most cases, buyers will find limited stock on hand, but if you find something you like, you can save thousands.

As usual, Deals of the Week obtained pricing information from www.carcostcanada.com. Here’s a detailed look.

Behind the wheel: Volvo S60 T6

HERE’S a hard one for you. Do you go for a small engine, low specification German prestige car or, for the same or less money, a fully kitted out Volvo S60 T6 with a 224kW/440Nm six cylinder engine at $64,950?

In the past you might have hesitated but we would vote with our wallet in the case of the new S60.

It takes the sales race right up to the high-priced Europeans, pulls out, overtakes them and leaves them in the dust - literally.

Lexus comes close with its new, base model IS350 but is a rear-wheel-drive and can’t match the Volvo for kit.

On top of that, the S60 is styled to delight with a coupe look to its sculpted flanks and a contemporary interior with easy-to-use controls and appealing materials.

Volvo boasts about the safety of S60 and it’s right up there as you’d expect.

But the new technology safety features are optional in a $5000 “driver’s support pack” that includes collision warning with auto braking, pedestrian detection using a camera and radar, adaptive cruise control with queue assist lane departure warning, driver fatigue warning and blind spot warning.

The pedestrian detection system is a first and is so important, it should be standard on the S60.

But that’s enough of the safety stuff because this is a sporty sedan with impressive performance credentials thanks in part to the 3.0-litre turbo straight six transversely mounted up front feeding all four wheels though a sweet six-speed auto transmission.

The engine has been around for a while and is uprated in this instance to Euro 5 emissions specification as well as having significantly more power and torque.

It features a twin scroll turbo which functions across a wide engine speed range boosting performance from idle to redline without turbo lag.

Fuel economy is quoted at 10.2 litres/100km combined but we saw better than that on a freeway run. The preferred brew is premium unleaded.

Coupled with the potent engine is a sporty ride and sharp handling that are just right for a wide mix of driving. Comfy over rough roads, the adaptive suspension also holds the S60 firmly in corners controlling its 1888kg bulk admirably.

The advanced stability control system offers torque vectoring that further aids car control. It selectively brakes or cuts power individually to each wheel.

Other dynamics are up with the engine including the steering and brakes.

We really appreciated the well shaped seats and all that the S60 has to offer inside particularly the premium audio system that is right up there with the best.

There is also full iPod connectivity, large format gobal positioning system screen, comprehensive trip computer, Bluetooth, voice control and a multi-function wheel to occupy your drive time.

The leather interior gives a pleasant driving environment and the entire interior is made without toxic substances.

Our only real complaint is the tyre inflation kit in lieu of a spare of any kind and the manual adjust lumbar support which is difficult to use.

The S60 is also available in diesel five-cylinder and turbo four-cylinder versions for less money. The four is a front-wheel-drive only.

Is the S60 enough to drag well-heeled punters out of their 3-Series, A3 or C-Class?

Maybe, especially if they want value for money which the S60 offers in buckets to say nothing of how it looks and goes.
