Bucking the monthly industry trend, Chrysler says it sold 7% more cars this August than last August.

Most of the major automakers saw a significant decline compared with last year, given that last August was the peak sales time for the government's cash-for-clunkers program.

August was the fifth-consecutive month of sales gains for Chrysler. U.S. sales hit 99,611 for the month, compared with 93,222 a year ago.

"This is proof positive that we are accomplishing our goals – steady, sustainable growth," said Fred Diaz, president and CEO of the Ram Truck Brand and head of U.S. sales for Chrysler.

Jeep sales were up 17%, with strong sales of the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee leading the way. Jeep Liberty, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot had a strong August as each model had double-digit percentage sales increases.

Ram Truck Brand posted a 5% increase in August. Ram Heavy Duty sales, like that Ram 2500 above, were up 48% in August, with the Crew Cab and Quad Cab models leading sales. Dodge Dakota sales were up 55%.
