Carjacker held for snatching and killing SUV driver

NEW DELHI: Police have recently arrested a man, who along with three associates, had taken a lift in a Toyota Fortuner at Ashram Chowk and then drove away with the vehicle after killing the driver on January 30. The accused has been identified as Israr Malik, a resident of Rajiv Colony near Mohan Nagar in Ghaziabad. The arrest was carried out by the GTB Enclave police in Northeast district. The Toyota Fortuner has been recovered, police said.

Police had begun the investigations into the case after it was registered at GTB Enclave police station on the complaint of Rajesh Kumar, who had reported that the driver of his Toyota Fortuner (DL 4 CNE 5629), Sandeep Mandal, a resident of Delhi Cantonment, had not returned home with the vehicle since January 30.

"A special investigation team was formed to trace the SUV and its driver. We finally succeeded in locating the missing vehicle at Simbhawali in UP. Since the vehicle was located in UP, the suspicion that it was a case of carjacking by criminals of Meerut and Ghaziabad became stronger,'' said DCP (Northeast) Sanjay Kumar Jain.

The team carried out inquiries at different petrol pumps, auto workshops, car mechanics and car dealers in Meerut and Ghaziabad. Finally, the police team got a tip-off that one Malik, a driver by profession, was seen in the Toyota Fortuner with three others. Raids were conducted at various hideouts of Malik and the team managed to nab him on February 21 near the Delhi-Ghaziabad Apsara border.

"During interrogation, Malik said that he wanted to drive luxury cars in order to impress girls by offering them lifts. So he planned to hijack a luxury car along with three of his companions. On January 30, all the four came to Ashram Chowk and around 9.30pm when they spotted a luxury Toyota Fortuner SUV, they signaled it for a lift and when the driver stopped the vehicle they told him that they wanted to go to Dhaula Kuan,'' said a senior police officer.

The driver asked for Rs 10 from each of the four passengers. After the vehicle travelled about half-a-kilometer, one of the three passengers on the rear seat asked the driver to stop the vehicle. When Sandeep stopped the SUV, Malik forcibly took control of the wheel. They then hit Sandeep on his head several times and strangulated him to death and dumped the body in the jungle near Karhedda village in Ghaziabad.

The recovery of the body of the driver has been confirmed by the Sahibabad police. Further investigations are being conducted by the police in New Friends Colony, from where the accused and the victim had left the city. The accused has a criminal history and is also involved in a criminal case in which he had snatched a Tata Tempo in Sahibabad. A case under the Arms Act is also registered against Malik in Meerut.

2011 Toyota Tacoma

The Basics:

True compact trucks are almost extinct in the U.S. market. With the exception of the Ford Ranger, most of the entry-level trucks available are mid-sizers, or almost full-sizers by some standards. The Toyota Tacoma is one of them. Like the Nissan Frontier, the Toyota Tacoma serves those who don't need the hardcore hauling and towing ability of the full-size trucks but still require the day-to-day durability of a pickup.

There's not a whole lot to say about the Tacoma's styling; it's a traditional compact truck design, with a little added flair on the outside, paired with the chunky, down-to-business look that nearly all Toyota trucks have had in recent years. Inside, entry Tacomas can look a little drab inside, though the top trim levels have an interior that uses more matte-metallic panels and upgraded upholstery that has more in common with the Camry and Avalon sedans. Regular Cab, Access Cab, and Double Cab editions of the Tacoma are offered, with standard or long-bed (LB) lengths, with four- or six-cylinder engines, and they all have the same styling, albeit with different levels of stretch for the cab and bed.

Provided you're not trying to move too quickly--or pull or haul much of a load--the base 159-horsepower, 2.7-liter four-cylinder will manage well enough (and for 2011, Toyota has expanded the number of four-cylinder Tacoma models). The 4.0-liter V-6 that's offered on the rest of the lineup provides a completely different personality, as it produces 236 horsepower and an even more noteworthy 266 pound-feet of torque--enough to move the Tacoma quickly even when you have a heavy load. The five-speed manual transmission, which shifts smoothly but has long throws; both the four-speed automatic that's optional with the four-cylinder and the five-speed automatic that's standard on V-6 models are responsive.

Overall, ride and handling are a little disappointing in the Tacoma--even among pickups, which typically do trade off some ride comfort and nimbleness for heavy-hauling ability. The steering is good and communicative, but the ride, on each of the several Tacomas we've sampled, has been hard and choppy--to the point that on pockmarked city surfaces the tires simply lose contact with the road. And maneuverability in the Tacoma doesn't seem any better than that of a full-size truck.

Perhaps the best way to judge the Tacoma's performance, since it's not very impressive, is by towing and payload. The Tacoma's payload is well into the 3/4-ton category, depending on the model, and its tow rating goes up to 6,500 pounds.

Compared with full-size trucks, the Tacoma disappoints for interior roominess and seating comfort, but compared with other mid-sizers like the Nissan Frontier it's competitive. That said, even though Double Cab versions have the space for four adults (two kids in back for Access Cabs, which have smaller back doors and seating), the rather skimpy, short and flat seats in front won't win you over for longer trips.

The 2011 Tacoma model line covers a wide range of needs in base form, especially if you're willing to add a few options, but two specialized models, the PreRunner and X-Runner, are focused for tough terrain and look the part. Especially for those who want an off-road able truck that really looks the part, there's a lot from which to choose. The PreRunner adds a higher-riding suspension, locking rear differential, and other appearance cues. The X-Runner gets wider wheels and tires; a lowered, sport-tuned suspension; and an X-braced frame (hence the name), along with extra interior conveniences. There's also a TRD Off-Road Package or, on top of that, new T|X and T|X Pro packages, which add 16-inch black bead-lock wheels, BFGoodrich Rugged Trail tires, black tube side steps, a stainless steel exhaust tip, and exterior graphics.

While the equipment list has lots of hardware for work and recreation, today's truck shoppers expect an almost carlike level of interior comfort and features; but in that respect, the features are a little sparse--as well as dated. Bluetooth hands-free connectivity still isn't offered on much of the lineup, and there's no factory navigation option whatsoever.

Electric cars are fair-weather friends of a sort—more efficient in warm weather. My recent experience with the plug-in Toyota Prius due to go on sale next year illustrated that well. Although I recharged the batteries every night of that frigid week of the big blizzard, I averaged only 47.1 mpg — about 3 mpg less than the EPA's estimate for a regular Prius, a hybrid you can't plug in.

Yet Toyota's New York public relations chief, who I've known for more than two decades and believe to be a truthful man, says that during the fall, when the weather was much warmer, he averaged 73.2 mpg on his 42-mile commute into Manhattan after a full battery recharge, compared with 51 mpg on the same trip in a conventional Prius. Since he couldn't recharge the car at his office, his fuel economy fell to 48.8 mpg on the return trip in the plug-in, he said.

Why the differences? Batteries lose power in the cold — as anyone knows who has found their battery dead and unable to start their engines on a frigid morning. And in cold weather the Prius plug-in's gasoline engine cycles on to warm the engine coolant for cabin heat and to keep the engine ready to start when its power is needed. Note also that real-world mileage for the regular Prius is less than the EPA's 50 mpg estimate; Consumer Reports, for example, averaged 44 mpg.

So whether your actual mileage is closer to mine or the PR man's, there should be a gain with the plug-in. Whether it's worth what is sure to be a higher price will depend on what that price is — a figure that Toyota has not released — and, of course, on the price of gasoline when you have to make the decision.

The plug-in Prius is supposed to operate as a pure electric vehicle for the first 13 miles up to 62 mph on a full charge. But, at least in cold weather, unless your accelerator foot is as light as a sparrow's, the gasoline engine will jump in to assist in acceleration on every standing start. In contrast, Chevrolet's new Volt offers between 25 and 50 miles of pure electric driving, with the gasoline engine assisting only occasionally in propelling the car.

After 13 miles, the plug-in Prius operates like any other Prius, offering comfort for five, a good ride and acceptable handling, except for overboosted power steering. A recharge takes three hours on an ordinary 110-volt household outlet — 90 minutes on a 220 outlet.

The regular Prius is deemed much better than average in reliability by Consumer Reports and gets a good, if not outstanding, crash protection rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

A TEENAGE girl gang is accused of a two-hour rampage during which they allegedly slashed a 24-year-old man, went drag racing in his stolen car and then led police on a dangerous pursuit.

The girls - aged 15, 16, 17 and 18 - allegedly began their crime spree while cruising in a gold-coloured Mercedes in Strathfield on Thursday about 9.30pm.

Police will allege the girls pulled up alongside a Toyota Camry and asked its driver Ramnaresh Pepalla for directions.

One of the girls then allegedly slashed his right arm, before Mr Pepalla ran from his car, fearing for his life.

Police will allege the two girls then got into the Camry and sped away toward Homebush Rd, followed closely by the Mercedes.

At 11.25pm, police received reports of two cars drag racing along Artillery Crescent in Seven Hills.

Officers will allege the 15-year-old Northmead girl was driving the Mercedes with the 16-year-old Emu Plains girl behind the wheel of the stolen Camry. Police said neither girl has ever held a licence.

When police arrived, the Mercedes sped away and led police on a short pursuit. The driver then stopped and was arrested.

Police arrested the three other girls at a unit in Artillery Crescent.

All four teenagers were taken to Blacktown Police Station where they were charged with several driving offences.

The eldest of the girls, Jamie Lee Burns, of Toongabbie, turned 18 just three months ago. She did not make a bail application when she appeared before Blacktown Local Court yesterday.

The other three girls appeared in Parramatta Children's Court, where Magistrate Brian Maloney was told the 15-year-old had previously breached her bail conditions 11 times.

The girls were all refused bail and will return to court in April.

Suburban Chicago man's fatal accident caught on tape; family wants answers

CHICAGO, Feb. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The family of a suburban Chicago man, who died last year when his Toyota vehicle suddenly accelerated and crashed, is demanding answers after the automaker announced another round of unintended acceleration recalls today.

Leon Przybylowski of Streamwood was killed in May 2010 when his Toyota Corolla suddenly accelerated without warning in a South Elgin strip mall, striking a parked vehicle and crashing into a wall.

On Thursday, Toyota announced another recall of 2.17 million, reviving concerns about the safety of its automobiles. Toyota has now recalled more than 14 million vehicles worldwide as a result of unintended acceleration defects, and has paid out a record $49 million in fines for delaying recalls.

Przybylowski's son, Leo, contends that Toyota's latest recall, which was prompted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, demonstrates that unanswered questions remain and that Toyota is accountable for the problems that caused the crash that killed his father.

"Tragically, 89 people, including my father, lost their lives because of a defect in Toyota vehicles," Leo Przybylowski said. "No more families should have to endure the pain of losing a loved one because of the company's negligence. We cannot allow Toyota to sweep this controversy under the rug."

Three months following his death, Przybylowski's vehicle was one of more than 1 million vehicles recalled for faulty engine control modules, the Chicago Tribune reported earlier this week. The article quoted an independent expert saying that the defect, which Toyota claimed could cause harsh shifting or engine failure, could be related to unintended acceleration.

Toyota's unintended acceleration problem prompted a massive recall of 8 million vehicles in 2009 and 2010. The automaker has already paid out a record $49 million in fines and civil penalties for delaying recalls dating back to 2005.

In July 2009, an internal memo from Toyota officials had boasted that the car company saved more than $100 million by avoiding a more extensive mechanical fix for sudden acceleration claims.

Przybylowski's attorney – Martin Dolan – is hopeful that safety regulators will eventually determine the cause of the acceleration burst, for which there is not yet a clear link. A recent report released by the NHTSA report called the link between electronic throttles and unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles unlikely, but Dolan believes the sample of vehicles tested in the report was far too small and that the tests performed were far too narrow.

"The fact Toyota is still recalling vehicles today clearly suggests the automaker cannot determine the cause of the sudden acceleration and the government report is obviously not conclusive," Dolan said. "Internal defects exist in these cars."

Although Toyota officials claimed that the NHTSA report exonerated the automaker, Dolan noted that the NASA engineers who conducted the study were guarded saying the electronic malfunctions were not "impossible" and that their findings " do not "vindicate the system."

According to Dolan, Przybylowski's accident may be the only instance where a case of sudden unintended acceleration was caught on camera. A surveillance camera in the strip mall parking lot where Przybylowski crashed captured the accident and shows how quickly the car accelerated.

Before dying from his injuries later that day, Przybylowski told family members at the hospital his vehicle "took off like a jackrabbit and there wasn't anything we could do to stop it."

In November 2010, Leo Przybylowski filed a lawsuit against Toyota, claiming his father was a victim of the sudden unintended acceleration caused by a Toyota manufactured vehicle.

Despite the release of the report, federal regulators are still considering ways to improve vehicle safety. They may address mechanical flaws and propose a mandatory braking override system – one that some manufacturers already employ.

Q: I recently purchased a 2008 Hyundai Tiburon with low mileage. I know the company must make parts for 10 years, but what about after that? Should I plan on holding it for under 10 years?
—Larry Chiarello, Shrewsbury, N.J.

A: Parts availability is usually not a big problem even after a manufacturer's obligation for parts runs out. Aftermarket suppliers often acquire the tooling and specifications needed to continue making parts for discontinued cars. However, because the Tiburon wasn't an especially big seller, there may not be enough demand to make a good business case for some parts makers.

If you keep the car for 10 years or more I don't think you will be unable to find parts, but there is a chance that finding them could become unreasonably difficult and expensive.

Q: I purchased a 2000 Mazda Miata with 36,000 miles and the master and slave cylinders for the clutch had to be replaced at 56,000 miles. I live in a hilly area and frequently put the cars in neutral and to coast for over three or four total miles out of the 23 mile trip to work. I was careful to wait until the car slowed down to where the engine would be at about only 2000 rpm when I eased back into fifth gear at the end of a long coast. Would this prematurely wear the clutch out on the Miata or do you think the former owner may have worn it out for me?
—Mike Ponzio, Morristown, Tenn.

A: As the owner of a 1995 Miata with its original clutch (only about 70,000 miles) I know that the cars are strongly built and can withstand hard driving. However, some owners misinterpreted Miatas' reputation for toughness as a license to abuse them. I think your car may have been owned by one of them. Of course the problem could just as easily stem from the occasional clutch-burning attempt at drag racing or many years of seemingly benign riding of the clutch pedal.
