Q: I recently purchased a 2008 Hyundai Tiburon with low mileage. I know the company must make parts for 10 years, but what about after that? Should I plan on holding it for under 10 years?
—Larry Chiarello, Shrewsbury, N.J.

A: Parts availability is usually not a big problem even after a manufacturer's obligation for parts runs out. Aftermarket suppliers often acquire the tooling and specifications needed to continue making parts for discontinued cars. However, because the Tiburon wasn't an especially big seller, there may not be enough demand to make a good business case for some parts makers.

If you keep the car for 10 years or more I don't think you will be unable to find parts, but there is a chance that finding them could become unreasonably difficult and expensive.

Q: I purchased a 2000 Mazda Miata with 36,000 miles and the master and slave cylinders for the clutch had to be replaced at 56,000 miles. I live in a hilly area and frequently put the cars in neutral and to coast for over three or four total miles out of the 23 mile trip to work. I was careful to wait until the car slowed down to where the engine would be at about only 2000 rpm when I eased back into fifth gear at the end of a long coast. Would this prematurely wear the clutch out on the Miata or do you think the former owner may have worn it out for me?
—Mike Ponzio, Morristown, Tenn.

A: As the owner of a 1995 Miata with its original clutch (only about 70,000 miles) I know that the cars are strongly built and can withstand hard driving. However, some owners misinterpreted Miatas' reputation for toughness as a license to abuse them. I think your car may have been owned by one of them. Of course the problem could just as easily stem from the occasional clutch-burning attempt at drag racing or many years of seemingly benign riding of the clutch pedal.
