Subaru to reveal local production plan next month, not ruling out possibility of giving it up

A PR executive with Fuji Heavy Industry said during an interview on February 21 that they need a period of time to study and discuss Subaru’s local production plan, and the final decision would be announced at the end of this March. Based on the previous negotiation, they could not rule out the possibility of giving up the plan.
Fuji Heavy Industry once partnered with China’s Guizhou Aviation Industry Group in 1990s. It launched a small car in China then, but the market performance was unsatisfactory. Besides, the conflicts of their partnership enhanced. It completely quitted Chinese market in 2002.
The PR executive said that the failure in the previous partnership does not affect Subaru’s local production plan this time. Subaru previously admitted Chery is its partner. Sources said that Chery and Subaru have determined their intent of cooperation, and may set up their joint venture in Dalian.
According to the previous media reports, Subaru and Chery would set up a 50:50 joint venture, which will make SUVs first, with an initial capacity of 50,000 units. The capacity will rise to 150,000 units to 200,000 units.
