Carjacker held for snatching and killing SUV driver

NEW DELHI: Police have recently arrested a man, who along with three associates, had taken a lift in a Toyota Fortuner at Ashram Chowk and then drove away with the vehicle after killing the driver on January 30. The accused has been identified as Israr Malik, a resident of Rajiv Colony near Mohan Nagar in Ghaziabad. The arrest was carried out by the GTB Enclave police in Northeast district. The Toyota Fortuner has been recovered, police said.

Police had begun the investigations into the case after it was registered at GTB Enclave police station on the complaint of Rajesh Kumar, who had reported that the driver of his Toyota Fortuner (DL 4 CNE 5629), Sandeep Mandal, a resident of Delhi Cantonment, had not returned home with the vehicle since January 30.

"A special investigation team was formed to trace the SUV and its driver. We finally succeeded in locating the missing vehicle at Simbhawali in UP. Since the vehicle was located in UP, the suspicion that it was a case of carjacking by criminals of Meerut and Ghaziabad became stronger,'' said DCP (Northeast) Sanjay Kumar Jain.

The team carried out inquiries at different petrol pumps, auto workshops, car mechanics and car dealers in Meerut and Ghaziabad. Finally, the police team got a tip-off that one Malik, a driver by profession, was seen in the Toyota Fortuner with three others. Raids were conducted at various hideouts of Malik and the team managed to nab him on February 21 near the Delhi-Ghaziabad Apsara border.

"During interrogation, Malik said that he wanted to drive luxury cars in order to impress girls by offering them lifts. So he planned to hijack a luxury car along with three of his companions. On January 30, all the four came to Ashram Chowk and around 9.30pm when they spotted a luxury Toyota Fortuner SUV, they signaled it for a lift and when the driver stopped the vehicle they told him that they wanted to go to Dhaula Kuan,'' said a senior police officer.

The driver asked for Rs 10 from each of the four passengers. After the vehicle travelled about half-a-kilometer, one of the three passengers on the rear seat asked the driver to stop the vehicle. When Sandeep stopped the SUV, Malik forcibly took control of the wheel. They then hit Sandeep on his head several times and strangulated him to death and dumped the body in the jungle near Karhedda village in Ghaziabad.

The recovery of the body of the driver has been confirmed by the Sahibabad police. Further investigations are being conducted by the police in New Friends Colony, from where the accused and the victim had left the city. The accused has a criminal history and is also involved in a criminal case in which he had snatched a Tata Tempo in Sahibabad. A case under the Arms Act is also registered against Malik in Meerut.
