2011 Subaru Outback

Positioned as a “Sport Utility Wagon” as early as 1995, Subaru’s Outback is built on a midsize car platform but has the size, raised ride and utility of an SUV.

And now more than ever, that seems to resonate with the Outback’s core customer base as well as appealing to broader market buyers.

Outside, our Azurite Blue Limited Edition was very handsome with its alloy wheels, fog lights, roof rails, privacy glass and wider stance.

The wheel base has actually increased by 3-inches for 2011 and the ride height rises by a tall 4-inches to add to the Outback’s off road functionality.

Inside, there’s a very accommodating 71 cubic feet of storage and a roomier overall feeling.

We liked the switchgear and features including the dual zone climate control, 440-watt Harmon Kardon stereo, Bluetooth, power leather seats, 60/40 split folding rear seat and quality feel of the textures and materials.

Included at $2,995 there was also an option package on our tester that gained us a power moonroof, navigation system with rear view camera and a Sirius Satellite kit.

The 3.6 Limited model we piloted is motivated by a 3.6 liter 6-cylinder boxer type engine that’s rated at 256 horsepower and is paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and is good for 18 mpg city and 25 highway.

Working efficiently and flowing power to all four wheels, this Subaru is like all Subaru’s, sure footed and agile providing a solid solution for inclement weather conditions, light off roading or simple daily driving.

Pricing on our tester was $34,504 after options.

Subaru, Gainax Put English Subs on Hōkago no Pleiades

The story centers around an afterschool club of magical girls who help recover fragments so that an alien from Pleiades can return home. The Pleiades is the English name for the star cluster that the Japanese call "Subaru" — the origin of the car maker's name and six-star logo.

2011 Subaru Legacy Review

For almost all of America this has been quite a winter. The rain, the snow, and the wind have been way above average. It's been Subaru weather. The good news is that the Legacy for 2011 has only some minor modifications since last year it was fully redesigned.
Unchanged is the Legacy's standard all – wheel – drive and horizontally opposed 4 and 6 cylinder engines, including the turbocharged one. Also standard is stability and traction control and antilock disc brakes. The 3.6 R model that we tested has a six-cylinder engine producing 256 HP and 247 pound feet of torque.

Subaru to reveal local production plan next month, not ruling out possibility of giving it up
Industry News | SusanZhao | February 23, 2011 at 3:22 pm

A PR executive with Fuji Heavy Industry said during an interview on February 21 that they need a period of time to study and discuss Subaru’s local production plan, and the final decision would be announced at the end of this March. Based on the previous negotiation, they could not rule out the possibility of giving up the plan.

Fuji Heavy Industry once partnered with China’s Guizhou Aviation Industry Group in 1990s. It launched a small car in China then, but the market performance was unsatisfactory. Besides, the conflicts of their partnership enhanced. It completely quitted Chinese market in 2002.

The PR executive said that the failure in the previous partnership does not affect Subaru’s local production plan this time. Subaru previously admitted Chery is its partner. Sources said that Chery and Subaru have determined their intent of cooperation, and may set up their joint venture in Dalian.

According to the previous media reports, Subaru and Chery would set up a 50:50 joint venture, which will make SUVs first, with an initial capacity of 50,000 units. The capacity will rise to 150,000 units to 200,000 units.

If the partnership plan goes smoothly, it will be Subaru’s second overseas plant. The insufficient experience of opening

Scooby STI is potent AND practical

If there is one thing I’ve always liked about that particular class of performance car of which the Subaru WRX STI forms part, it’s that they’re practical.

Think about it, here you have a four-door sedan with enough space for the core family and it goes like the proverbial “bat outta hell”. And now Subaru has done right by its fans by putting the boot back into this iconic brute.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, that’s for sure. I do think the car is attractive, but there are other hot sedans (BMW’s 335i, for example) that I find prettier.

But going by the number of turned heads, thumbs-up signs and other positive responses I got while driving this beast, a whole province of people would disagree with me.

I dare say, and I know I will be raising Cain among the true faithful saying it, I quite liked the hatch version’s looks.

But then, I can’t say I was absolutely enamoured with the styling of the earlier sedan versions. So I suppose I should be ducking the stones and brickbats now, because the hatchback version was rather less than well received by the Scooby faithful, who wanted a boot with a huge wing on the back.

Well, they got the boot, and the big wing, back - and they’ve got the Scooby with the biggest pair of boots yet included in the bargain.

The car churns out 221kW at 6 000 rpm and 407Nm of torque at 4 000rpm - but that’s not all, folks. If you can handle a bit less torque and yearn for easier gearshifts, you can now also get a five-speed automatic with paddleshift kicking out 350Nm, but over a broader band of engine speed.

Having had the car for a mere two days, I can’t really call this road test, more a driving impression. And it left a good impression.

Look, Subaru is Subaru. They make nice, medium-quality family cars. With a growl and some real teeth, in the case of the WRX STI.

Essentially, the recipe is the same with the latest STI. The 2.5-litre boxer engine (a flat four, like the old Beetle engine, only infinitely better) is turbo-charged and wears a number 12 combat boot in the kicking department.

But it now also sports variable valve timing on inlet and outlet valves and, if I’m not mistaken, it will certainly put a blueish tint to the shins of most of its opposition, when driven in anger.

The Ford Focus RS comes to mind.

While the Ford’s take-off might be marginally quicker, I have no doubt everything else will belong to the Scooby. The STI is easier to drive, handles much better and is not cursed with the Ford’s elephantine torque steer under power.

The STI’s chassis is even better than its predecessors’. The suspension is far stiffer than before, resulting in “flatter” cornering, while driver involvement remains high as you want it. To enhance handling, Subaru has made the suspension system’s lower control arms from aluminium, reducing unsprung weight and helping the suspension to work more effectively.

The six-speed manual STI retains the Driver Controlled Centre Differential, while both STI models also enjoy the benefits of Si-Drive, effectively enabling the driver to choose from three throttle maps to suit conditions and mood.

Inside, everything is as one would expect it to be - neat, but not ostentatious, comfortable without being extraordinarily plush. In fact, sitting in a Scooby, you could be forgiven for thinking you’re in an upmarket Toyota, for instance. Except for the Recaro sport seats in the front, of course. Recaro - need I say more? As far as I am concerned they are sport seats. You simply don’t need more.

Just maybe, the car is a bit quiet. You cannot listen to Janis Joplin AND enjoy the engine sound with the windows closed and the aircon on. So, I didn’t listen to Janis; I switched off the aircon and opened the window as often as I could, because that special flat-four engine sound is music to my ears.

Build quality? Well, things tend to be a bit softer than the German cars of our world, of course. That big scoop on the bonnet that allows the fresh stuff to cool the intercooler sometimes quivers like a bowl of jelly on a rougher road.

The odd rattle did appear here and there.

Overall though, nothing even suggested it wanted to fall off on a gravel road so it’s good enough.

At R519 000-odd, depending on options, this is one very exciting car to drive - hotter than a Porsche Boxster and cheaper too - and you can take the family on holiday, drag a trailer around and tackle gravel with ease.

Nope, I cannot fault it at all.

On test: Subaru WRX STi

All hail the return of the iconic rally car for the road, as Subaru has gone back to the classic four-door saloon body style but lost the Impreza name in the process.

Whilst the latest five-door hatch version of the Impreza STi was practical and softer making it a much more useable car, it didn't really appeal to the die-hard Subaru enthusiasts. This is the car that's designed to change all that, as for the first time since the 2007 RB320, the WRX is available as a saloon

Antoine L’Estage Takes Victory On The 100 Acre Wood Rally

Canadian Antoine L’Estage and co-driver Nathalie Richard claimed victory on the Rally of the 100 Acre Wood, but a fine fourth place finish by Super Production crew Travis and Terry Hanson sees the pair retain the championship lead, as four-time Rally America Champion Travis Pastrana made a fleeting appearance at the event.

After retiring from the recent Sno*Drift rally, both Antoine L’Estage and David Higgins were looking to deliver top quality performances on the 100 Acre Wood event, and get their championship challenges back on track.

From the outset L’Estage set a good pace, one which would see him maintain the lead throughout and eventually claim victory at the ceremonial rally finish in Salem. L’Estage and his co-driver Richard dominated proceedings with fastest times on ten of the events fifteen stages on their way to the rally win.

Britain’s David Higgins, co-driven by Craig Drew, once again made the trip to the U.S.A from Wales to compete for the Subaru Rally Team USA outfit. His performance over the two days saw him finish 17.7 seconds behind a in-form L’Estage at the finish, but the points would be a valuable haul for Higgins’ championship assault after retirement on the Sno*Drift.
